Tips to Make the Alphabet Learning Fun for Preschoolers

Teaching the alphabet is the first step towards helping preschoolers learn how to read and write. While some children can learn the alphabet quickly, others need some time and practice to learn the letters. 1. Make a Story out of the Alphabet

The Alphabet Tree is the best way to teach alphabet recognition. It shows each individual letter and how they learn to work together to make words.

2. Use Activities That Tie Back to the Story

For example, you can have the kids play in leaves while retelling the story. This helps them to understand each individual leave (letter) and how it is part of something bigger.

3. Story Retelling

Illustrate a retelling of the story using a whiteboard. You can show how changing the location of letters changes what they say and the words they make.

4. Let Children Participate

Let the kids choose what letters to change and move around in the illustration. Participation is a great way to get your children engaged and see how much they actually understand.

5. Letter Illustration

Have the children illustrate the story with letters. You can use magnets, stamps, or cutouts of the letters.

6. Use Pictures

Let the kids present their retelling of the story using their pictures. This helps with both memorizing the letters, as well as seeing how much they have retained.

7. Alphabet Song

Have the alphabet song playing in the background or play it in the car on drives. This is a great way to reinforce the alphabetical order.

8. Divide the Alphabet

When it is time to memorize, divide the alphabet up into one or two letters a day. Let them focus on the letters a few at a time to learn the order.
