Giving and Getting: Teach Your Kids the True Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is the season of giving love. Santa Claus, stockings and visions of sugar plums are integral parts of the holiday spirit. However, it’s important for all of us, especially our children, to reflect on what Christmas is really about – giving and receiving, spending time together, and helping others.

Here are some ways to teach your children that Christmas is more than just receiving gifts:

Books Many stores have Christmas books that teach the true spirit of Christmas. One chapter a night until Christmas morning, after dinner and before dessert, is usually a good time. Have each child read a paragraph or two. If the chapter is only a paragraph long, alternate between children. As they learn the story, they will learn the true meaning of the holidays.

Charity There is no greater joy than to watch a child’s eyes light up when they unwrap that perfect gift. Instill in your children the importance of charity by explaining to them that there are children less fortunate than they. Look for child-centric charity events in your area and make it a point to attend. Tree lightings in town centers generally include activity areas where your children can assemble toys for the needy. Such activities are designed to let a child experience the joy of giving before they receive.

Involve Family Members Teach your child that giving the gift of time to your family is priceless and can be cherished for years. Ask your children to call their grandparents or visit them. This will make them feel special, and your child will also learn that spending time with your family is the best way to celebrate the holidays.

Have Discussions Teach your child that the true spirit of Christmas is giving, caring, and showing compassion. Explain to them how they can help others. Donating food to the needy and visiting a nursing home are great to make them realize that it’s all about helping others.
