Happy Memorial Day: 4 Ways Your Kids Can Participate
Memorial Day is a national holiday reserved for honoring and remembering those who have served in the armed forces, especially those who have lost their lives while in the military and defending the United States. Memorial Day is always on the last Monday in May and is a federal holiday, meaning kids get the day off from school and child care programs and most adults also have the day off.
This is also an opportunity to teach your kids about Memorial Day through patriotic themed activities. Here are four you can try on Memorial Day or even leading up to the holiday to teach them about the day. These same activities can be used at child care programs as well.
-
Writing to the troops. Many kids do this activity at school. The kids may write to the troops serving overseas and can ask them questions or even simply brighten their day with a letter. There are several military pen pal programs for children.
-
Attend parades or services. There is no doubt that events on parades and services will be held to honor those people serving in the armed forces. Taking your kids to these events is a great way to educate them the importance of Memorial Day.
-
Memorial Day pinwheel craft. Art and craft activities can also help your kids enjoy and participate on Memorial Day. They can create patriotic pinwheels made out of simple craft paper.
-
Various flag crafts. You can also have your kids create the American flag with watercolors, construction paper, or even with finger paint and their hand prints. These can be used as decoration and a way for them to feel patriotic and understand the meaning of Memorial Day.
